The design for Anchorage Independent Public School’s outdoor classroom provides an innovative place for students to explore their curiosities. The outdoor classroom pulls design cues from nature and incorporates them into the finer details of the space, such as the stamped concrete patterns imprinted with local flora and fauna. The three themed breakout pods are adaptable for students of any age and learning ability and include spaces for data collection and interaction with plants and wildlife. The design also highlights the school’s devotion to teaching sustainability practices by incorporating interactive rain barrels, a food waste composting area, a weather monitoring station, a human-size sun dial, and native grass and perennial plantings.
