Anchorage Independent Public School

BDC’s design for Anchorage Independent Public School’s outdoor classroom in Louisville, Kentucky provides an innovative place for students to explore their curiosities. The outdoor classroom’s design was inspired by cues from nature, which have been incorporated into the space in details such as stamped concrete patterns imprinted with local flora and fauna. Three themed breakout pods are adaptable to students of any age and learning ability, and include spaces for data collection and interaction with plants and wildlife. The design also facilitates the school’s mission to teach sustainability by incorporating interactive rain barrels, a food waste composting area, a weather monitoring station, a sun dial, and native grass and perennial plantings.
