Center for Women and Families Courtyard

The Center for Women & Families, in Louisville, Kentucky, sought to transform its courtyard into a restorative and playful space for its residents. BDC developed three goals for the project: to create a welcoming and rejuvenating space; to use plants that are resilient to the stresses of an active play environment; and to enliven the space with color and sculptural elements to elicit a bright, tranquil, and memorable experience. Despite the site’s modest size, BDC realized its potential to provide areas for parents to congregate, children to play, and people to gather. A ribbon-like tricycle path winds its way through the courtyard, tying the space together and inviting active play.
