J.D. Nichols Plaza is a linear mid-block space-oriented east to west between East Market and Jefferson Streets in downtown Louisville. The Plaza is a 1.1-acre site providing a means of cross-campus pedestrian circulation, a place for informal gathering, and a vibrant urban space for public events. Intersecting waves delineate walking paths, seat walls, and planters, and are further highlighted with careful tree alignment and lighting placement. The long, narrow space and flowing lines suggest movement, replacing the utilitarian Nanny Goat Strut Alley with a green pedestrian alley. The plaza spaces also features green infrastructure witha hidden below grade infiltration reservoir to handle on-site storm-water runoff.
