BDC worked with Gambles Associates to renovate Lock 9 Park which is situated along the Great Miami River in downtown Piqua, Ohio. There were three key design objectives: preserving the existing Miami & Erie Canal Lock 9 structure, establishing a stronger connection between the river and the downtown district, and facilitating multipurpose usability within the park. The existing levee was redesigned into a stepped terrace, creating a seamless connection between the lower bike trail along the river and the downtown district. The original Lock was unearthed and preserved, recalling the site’s history while creating a walkway portal to the river. Alongside the historic canal is an interactive splash pad. BDC assisted in facilitating a multi-faceted community engagement process throughout the design process.
